Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have always enjoyed their privacy. The pair have removed themselves from the public eye a lot more often now that baby Archie has joined their family.
They’ve been really careful in their management of Archie’s exposure to crowds, the media, and public scrutiny.
Princess Diana influences Harry’s decisions regarding privacy
Prince Harry is totally on board with keeping Archie away from the media. He and Meghan are, reportedly, dedicated to giving their son the most normal upbringing possible and Harry is “fiercely protective” of Archie. This is likely due to the media’s influence upon his mother’s death, his own experiences as a child growing up in the public eye, and how much public attention he received after his mother’s passing.
A royal source recently told Daily Express: “Harry and William had to go through that unbearable grief [of Princess Diana’s passing] not in private but before the eyes — and camera lenses — of the entire world. He was just a kid and he hated it.” Since the world watched him battle his most private feelings he’s not keen on letting that happen to Archie.
The source continued to explain that “Harry is fiercely protective of Archie and has promised him he will never have to go through that.”
Meghan Markle’s desire for privacy will be challenging
Meghan Markle has made it clear that she intends to “bring Archie up in as normal a way as possible.” This means that she is going to be insisting on more and more privacy for her and her family.
One of the ways she has ensured this is by adjusting the expectations surrounding photo shoots of her young son. She and Harry have made every effort to maintain secrecy surrounding both his birth and his christening.
Fitzwilliams, a prominent royal biographer, shared that “the arrangement has been that in exchange for an occasional photo on birthdays on special occasions they will be left alone and this is obviously likely to continue. Frogmore Cottage is totally secure.”
The royal expert also mentioned how their actions will make their lives more challenging. “Harry and Meghan have shown since Archie’s birth that they are determined to have total privacy and this will make their relations with the press challenging.”
The couple has been criticized for their behavior
Followers of the royal family have not been pleased by Meghan and Harry’s decision to keep Archie out of sight. It will be a delicate balance for them to shield Archie from the media while also keeping the public satisfied that they are included in the young royal’s life.
Balancing public access to the royal family with their desire for privacy has always been a difficult thing for members of the monarchy to manage.
The secrecy surrounding Archie’s christening is only the beginning of what will likely be a long string of events that the public is left out of. Just more fodder to irritate fans.
Meghan Markle will never have privacy again
Despite her best efforts, the Duchess will never have the degree of privacy she’s hoping for. Assuming a role as a member of the royal family comes with a certain level of responsibility to the public.
As a prominent public figure she is doomed to be in the spotlight. She hopes, however to shield her son from a little of that attention. At least, until he’s old enough to make decisions about his own public appearances.
Meghan and Harry will obviously continue to control how much they share with the public. In their new home renovations they have maintained strong efforts to secure their home, Frogmore Cottage, with a great security system and team in place. Moving to the country there will help them have some of the solitude they so desire.
